Large-scale interoperability of legacy object bases

چکیده
In this paper, we present a truly object-oriented approach to large-scale interoperabil-ity of heterogeneous and autonomous databases. The problem with such an environment is that users typically have limited insight into the semantics of data deened in foreign databases. We show that existing schema integration techniques are not quite suited to such environments, due to diiculties in determining the real-world entity modelled by a class from its deenition alone. In our approach, objects rather than classes are considered to be the fundamental unit of integration. The integrated class hierarchy is a result of the relationships between local and foreign objects rather than being deened explicitly. In other words, we compare class hierarchies based on the objects they classify only. We argue that in large-scale data interoperation, deening relationships between local and foreign objects is more applicable than deening relationships between classes.

An Exchange Model for Reengineering Tools
Tools support is recognised as a key issue in the reengineering of large scale object-oriented systems. However, due to the heterogeneity in today’s object-oriented programming languages, it is hard to reuse reengineering tools across legacy systems. This paper proposes a language independent exchange model, so that tools may perform their tasks independent of the underlying programming languag...
متن کاملSemantic Web Technologies for Aerospace
Emerging Semantic Web technology such as the DARPA Agent Markup Language (DAML) will support advanced semantic interoperability in the next generation of aerospace architectures. The basic idea of DAML is to mark up artifacts (e.g., documents, sensors, databases, legacy software) so that software agents can interpret and reason with the information. DAML will support the representation of ontol...
متن کاملInteroperability of Legacy Databases
The thesis focuses on the interoperability of autonomous legacy databases with the idea of meeting the actual requirements of an organization. The interoperability is resolved by combining the topdown and bottom-up strategies. The legacy objects are extracted from the existing databases through a database reverse engineering process. The business objects are defined by both the organization req...
متن کامل3d Solid Representation and Visualization for Large Heterogeneous Sites with Urban and Rural Heritage - a Case Study
This article introduces usage of 3D solid modeling methods in order to represent and visualize highly complex environments such as large heterogeneous sites integrating urban and rural heritage content. The theoretical bases of a new simulation system implementing this approach will then be detailed. The article will present a case study concerning urban and rural sites 3D solid modeling for th...
متن کاملThe Role of Meta-Objects and Self-Description in an Engineering Data Warehouse
As enterprises, data and functions become increasingly complex and distributed the need for information systems to be both customisable and interoperable also increases. Large scale engineering and scientific projects demand flexibility in order to evolve over time and to interact with external systems (both newly designed and legacy in nature) while retaining a degree of conceptual simplicity....
